I wants to help you get to, or better still, come back to the best ski village in Valchiavenna

By passing on my travel tips and ideas honed after 10 years of “Independent” booking

 

There are many ways to get to Madesimo and here they are

 

Of course you can drive. It is 690 miles from Calais and will take over 12 hours driving.

Don’t let the Sat Nav take you through the Splugga Pass as it will be Closed.

Take the route via from Zurich via Chiavenna but I rather some one else do the hard work so -

 

I will explain and help you to get there from the airport by Taxi (the best way) or by bus and train.

 

Don’t be put off the Taxi option by the cost. We have, as been said before “A cunning plan”

 

Don’t be put off by the Bus and train it is easy and very straight forward.

 

So read on

Fly to Milan or Bergimo

 

To Milan Linate  (the closest to Milan and the Central railway station)

From the Airport to Madesimo

 

3.  Taxi

The Madesimo Taxi service can get a car, mini bus, bus or coach to the airport and pick you up at Arrivals to whisk you away to Madesimo.
The journey time is aprox 2 hours and a little less if Bergamo a little more if Malpensa. 

The distance is 76 miles from Bergamo, 87 from Linate and 105 from Malpensa.

This is the best way and much to be recommended.

So much so that I have started a “Taxi share” scheme.

Simply look at the other Taxi Share flight bookings and if you can be on the same flight then you may be able to Taxi Share or you may start a new Taxi Share flight.

The cost of a Taxi one way is €200 so with 4 in the taxi then it is €50 each (And that is only twice the bus/rail fare).

So To join the Taxi Share just go to the Taxi Share Scheme web site see if you can make up the magic 4, or more.

Book your flights then email your flight details to go 2 madesimo.

Remember we need the Date, Airline and Flight number and the number of passengers.

We will email you to invite you to Taxi share when there are 4 or more of you on the same flight. 

If you agree then you will be asked to pay for your part of the Taxi Share (by Credit Card). 

We will then confirm your taxi when all payments have been made. 

All you do is look for the Go 2 Madesimo at the arrivals.
If more join you then the Taxi driver will have a refund for you (in cash).

If you need any more information then email the go 2 madesimo or ask the hotel where you will be staying.

 

4.  Bus and train

This is the “Independent” and “GREEN” way and is the cheapest, unless you are in a Taxi share of Over 12.

We have done this many times and it is so simple and hassle free.

Mind you getting on and off the buses and trains does prove if you are fit for the slopes and it’s not advised to bring your own skis.

You can, of course hire good quality skis and poles and most hotels have a discount arrangement with one of the many hire shops in the village.

For a “mid range” skis and poles expect to pay between €70-85 and €35-50 for a Child.

 

So this is what you need

At the airport after you clear Arrivals you will see the usual Yellow sign for taxi, Car Parks, Trains and Bus.

You need to follow the bus sign for the bus to take you to Milan Central station. Ask if you are not sure Milano Centralle Stationie preago).

If you are at Bergamo you will want the Bergamo Station bus.

You can buy the ticket on the bus from the driver on all the busses.

Don’t get a return stick to a single.  The bus waiting for the return journey may not be the same company.

It will be

 

€5.00 from Milan Linate, Airport Bus 1  Airport Bus 2 and takes 25 minutes

 

€10.00 from Milan Malpensa,  Airport Bus and takes 50 minutes

 

€2.00 from Bergamo.  Airport Bus to from Bergamo Train Station and takes 15 minutes

 

The train tickets can be purchased on-line and printed ready for the journey. 

You can buy the tickets up to 3 days before travel and they are valid for 4 hours after the train you select. 

So always select the train that is just possible as you can always get the next or even the one after that but you can’t travel on a train before the one you book. 

You can also get the tickets at the Rail station from the Ticket office or at a self service machine that prompts in English!

This is the web site to buy your ticket.  First register so that you can buy your tickets then buy the tickets

 

At Milan Central station you need to get to the Inter City train that will take you to Lecco and then Colico where you change for the local train to Chiavenna.

 

Look for the Tirano train that is where the train will terminate and if you get there you missed the Colico stop!

There will be up to 5 stops before Colico and the journey time is 1 hour 22 minutes

The Inter City train will continue to Sondrio and then Tirano

At Colico you get the local train to Chiavenna, where it terminates. The train will be waiting for you and you can see it a little further up the platform.   It will take 45 minutes and has 6 stops to get to Chiavenna.

 

At Bergamo station you need to get the local train to Lecco, where it terminates, and it will take 41 minutes and has 5 stops.

At Lecco you will get the Inter City train, coming from Milan going to Colico where you change for the local train to Chiavenna. 

There will be up to 2 stops before Colico and the journey time is 52 minutes

The Inter City train will continue to Sondrio and then Tirano

At Colico you get the local train to Chiavenna, where it terminates. It will take 45 minutes and has 6 stops

 

At Chiavenna the Blue Madesimo bus will be waiting for you in the Station plaza.  The journey time is 1 hour and the cost is €2.90

But you can get a Taxi and it will cost €45.00 with you in the village 25 minutes later.  Again the ticket can be purchased from the bus driver.
When you get to Madesimo wait until the bus turns into the Bus Parking bay but those at Grand Hotel Madesimo, get off at the first bus stop in the village.

walk up the road the bus came up.

 

For –

La Meridiana

Cascarta

Soldanella

walk back down the road the bus came up and turn right up Via Alla Ponte.

 

For –

Ferre

Capriolo

Emet

Res La Primula

walk over the foot bridge and then in the main street turn right down the valley

 

For the others

walk over the foot bridge and then in the main street turn left up the valley
